Yusaku and Kyoko

I’ve just moved to a new flat in a new(ish) city (London)!  Here’s a little painting of two characters from Rumiko Takahashi’s manga Maison Ikkoku, which is sort of housing-themed, as Kyoko is the manager of a house full of eccentric troublemakers.

The story starts off as a silly romantic comedy between earnest but irresponsible student tenant and stubborn, uptight property manager, but by the end both characters have grown, and the mood is bitter-sweet, intense and moving.

Takahashi’s Ranma 1/2 was the first manga I read, and I was bowled over by the dynamic black/white layouts, characterisation, and mix of daily life and ridiculous fantasy. I got myself through highschool by bribing myself with these books, heh!
